There are several misconceptions about using audiobooks as a way to consume written content:

  • Audiobooks are not “real” reading: Some people believe that listening to an audiobook isn’t as legitimate as reading a physical book. However, research has shown that both activities engage similar cognitive processes and can result in equivalent comprehension and retention of information (Deniz et al., 2019). • Audiobooks are for people who are too lazy to read: This misconception assumes that audiobook listeners are simply looking for an easier way to consume books. In reality, many people use audiobooks because they offer convenience and flexibility, allowing listeners to multitask or enjoy books during activities like commuting or exercising.

“Clearly, people are seeking a wide range of genres, from the autobiography and general fiction to self-improvement and fantasy, and many stories listened to as audiobooks are far from being lazy options”. Fleur Morrison

Are Audiobooks the Lazy Option

  • Audiobooks are not as immersive as reading: While it’s true that the experience of listening to a book is different from reading it visually, audiobooks can still be highly immersive. Skilled narrators can bring characters and stories to life through voice acting and dramatic pacing, enhancing the overall listening experience.
  • Audiobooks are only for people with visual impairments: While audiobooks are indeed a valuable resource for individuals with visual impairments, they are also enjoyed by a wide range of people for various reasons, including convenience, entertainment, and the ability to consume books in different formats.
  • Audiobooks are inferior to reading because you can’t highlight or annotate: While audiobooks don’t allow for physical highlighting or annotation, many digital audiobook platforms offer features like bookmarks and notes, allowing listeners to mark important passages or jot down thoughts while listening.

False, False, False! If you model how to listen and journal, amazing things will happen!
