This month’s TEACHER FEATURE highlights Mrs. Keri Paolillo from Frank P. Long Intermediate School in Bellport, NY. Mrs. Paolillo is a forward-thinking teacher who is always looking for new ways to engage students in the constantly evolving digital landscape. A literacy specialist and coach for 10 years in a school with over 600 4th and 5th graders, she focuses on incorporating universal design principles into her lessons and recognizes and celebrates students for their literacy skills. Mrs. Paolillo also prioritizes building strong, positive relationships with her students, evident in their enthusiasm to learn and collaborate with her. She empowers students to take ownership of their literacy experiences, fostering self-regulation, a growth mindset, and a sense of accomplishment. Mrs. Paolillo can often be seen leading small groups of students in various reading and writing activities. For instance, some students may be recording themselves reading aloud for later sharing, while others listen and follow along in a physical book. Some students engage in book discussions and create digital slides for book clubs.

“She doesn’t just tell us what to do. She allows us to come up with ideas, like creating digital summaries of the books we read or listen to books we like. She talks to us about our ideas and helps us to plan”.

~Jax (5th Grader at FPL)

Not only does Mrs. Paolillo find innovative ways to incorporate digital literacy experiences into her student’s daily learning, she also is enthusiastic and willing to share resources, lessons, and ideas with other teachers. Her enthusiasm for collaboration and mentorship exemplifies what exceptional teaching should look like in todays digital age! UDL Solutions is proud to celebrate Mrs. Paolillo and feature her as May’s “Teacher Feature”!
